The Associated Artists of Winston-Salem have come a long way since [their beginning in] October of 1955. Today, the organization has a membership of over 500 artists. This non-profit organization is made up of both juried and non-juried members. According to Sharon Nelson, the Executive Director, a large majority of the membership is comprised of Associate non-juried members. The organization plans 8 exhibits each year for their downtown gallery. Some of these exhibits are open to all members, while others are focused on the juried membership. Membership networking events create very unique opportunities for new, non-juried artists from the ages of 15 and up, to associate with and learn from more experienced artist members.
There are many Art Guilds in our Triad area with juried memberships. The Associated Artists Organization focuses on creating an environment where artists can join, gain experience exhibiting, and learn how to get from where they are to wherever they want to be. Sharon compared it to a "Bridge" to help inexperienced artists develop their art to whatever level they choose.
They give art "a place to be seen by giving it a space to be shown." Open to anyone 15 years old or older, their mission is simple -"to give all artists a place to show work and interact with other artists." From gallery exhibits to artistic workshops, the opportunities are endless.
At present, over twenty different business locations around the area have extended invitations to Artist members of AAWS to exhibit their artwork at their businesses creating what is called a Community Art Exhibit.....
