Dempsey Essick is truly a homegrown artist. He grew up in Welcome, where he completed his schooling and continues to live, just 15 minutes south of Winston-Salem.
The detail of Dempsey's work is astounding. He has established a reputation as one of the South's leading Realist Painters. He states that he likes to paint things in a 'Natural Setting.' The more closely you study each painting, the more detail you will find. His 'Day Lillies' painting has no less than 1,000,000 brush strokes. His painting of the Carrington-Carr House at Two Meeting Street in Charleston, South Carolina entitled “Two Meeting Street” required all of 832 hours of work.
