Amos Westmoreland
Advance, NC
Acrylic
Amos Westmoreland has a diverse interest in acrylic paintings ranging from landscapes, still life to figurative works. Acrylic paints, developed originally by the automobile industry, were quickly taken up by all types of artist who saw the endless possibilities of a paint medium which could incorporate all the traditional pigments, plus a wide range of new organic colors. They can be used in the manner of the older mediums like watercolor, gouache, oil and tempera, and yet have none of the technical limitations. Whether its thick creamy paint applied with a pallet knife or from beautiful effects from glazes or transparent washes, Westmoreland enjoys the adventure and freedom of acrylic paints.

Artist's Statement
I was deeply inspired by impressionist artist and lifelong friend, the late Gene Hege, of Lewisville, NC. Gene made painting look easy and fun. With untold hours of intense observation and pertinent questions about color, light, composition and technique, I believe gave me an inherent ability to more quickly apply concept to practice.
I am currently studying with artist Carolyn Blaylock at her Studio in Lewisville, NC. Carolyn, an expressive colorist, is an invaluable source of knowledge relating to pushing subtle color, unseen by most, into beautiful paintings that seem to come to life on the canvas.
Every creative skill has an infinite learning curve. I have the basic fundamental skills to be a good painter. However, I am excited about the endless possibilities of becoming a better artist. I believe an artist’s work should connect emotionally and/or spiritually with the viewer. That’s what I strive for. That’s what being an artist is all about.
