Helen Etters: Photography and Digital

Helen's work has won awards in national juried competitions. Her altered photograph "Levitation" won the postcard prize for a national juried exhibition in Lexington, NC. Her work has been shown and sold in galleries in NC and Virginia, and, in 2009, two of her digital creations were exhibited in the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.

I am a self-taught photographer, with interests mainly in the forms and details of nature, the colors and shapes in nature, reflections, the effects of sunlight and shadows. I combine my love of shapes and colors with my love for playing at the computer. Sometimes I will begin with a single photograph and create variations of the formal elements as I look for an arrangement or re-arrangement in which the form and content become something more interesting, or satisfying, or strange. Although many of my pictures begin as photographs, many are digital drawings which bypass the camera and express my love for geometrical shapes and whimsical drawings.
