THEATRE/DANCE
Only Skin Deep? Tattooing in World Cultures. January 5 to August 28. Museum of Anthropology, Wake Forest University. In this exhibit, student curators explore why ancient mummies, members of traditional societies, and Wake Forest students are tattooed and with what designs. The traditional implements, historic illustrations, and contemporary photographs on display will excite tattoo aficionados and those just curious about a widespread custom. Admission is free. SUMMIT AT NIGHT: January 11 to February 27, 3:30pm. At Summit School 2100 Reynolda Road, Winston Salem. Summit School is now accepting registration for "Summit at Night" classes. This year's offerings include six symposiums, single meeting sessions which focus on topical subjects. Classes are also offered for all ages on topics ranging from photography and stop motion animation, to cooking, sumo-bot robot wrestling, yoga for kids, and tips for getting a book published. ART TASTING: The Community Arts Café will host ART TASTING on Saturday, February 6th from 7:00-8:30pm at the Gallery of the Arts, located at 411 West Fourth Street, in downtown Winston-Salem. Join us for an exciting evening of original works featuring music, drama, and dance performances presented by ART TASTING, an emerging performing arts organization based in Winston-Salem. Admission is $6 for the general public, $3 for students. This particular performance will provide a ‘Taste’ of what ART TASTING does and will also be a benefit to support and expand the work that the organization is doing in the community. QUILT EXHIBIT: Brenda Rothrock and Kelly Wood will feature their unique quilts in the Apple Gallery January 27th to February 23rd. Brenda and Kelly are a mother and daughter duo addicted to quilting. The UpperlineUp will be hosting our weekly free "open mike" Thursday October 29, 8pm at Churchill's on Elm in downtown Greensboro at 213 South Elm Street between Market & Washington. With Roberto Orihuela on vibraphone & percussion, Bil Jenko on piano, Jeff Weichinger on bass, & Jim Hoyle on drums, the group will be performing many of the cuts featured on their album "Strike", along with both contemporary & classic jazz, latin, swing, & blues. The Greensboro Fringe Festival is proud to announce The 8th Annual Greensboro Fringe Festival to take place in Downtown Greensboro from January 28th through February 14th. The only festival of its kind in the Triad, the 8th Annual Greensboro Fringe will present over 25 new works for the stage showcasing all local artists. SPORTS EXHIBITED: Illustrations from the North Carolina Society of Illustrators with images from with world of sports. New exhibition opening February 9 and running through April . Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, February 25 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Theatre Art Galleries, 220 E. Commerce Ave. High Point. NU CONCERT: The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) School of Music will present a concert by "nu" at 7:30pm Friday, Feb. 5, in Watson Chamber Music Hall on the campus, 1533 South Main St., Winston-Salem. NU is the student contemporary ensemble, formerly known as SACE (School of the Arts Contemporary Ensemble). NU is dedicated to works of new music as well as premieres of UNCSA student compositions. The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) and Krankies Coffee are partnering to present a film series called "Art Grind." This free series will present documentary and independent films that reflect upon the nature of art, music, creativity, ingenuity and the human spirit. The series will be held on the first Thursday of every month beginning Feb. 4. Screenings will be held at 7 p.m. at Krankies Werehouse located at 211 East Third Street, Winston-Salem. 336-397-2107.

ALL THAT JAZZ: It's a tale of two composers at the Winston-Salem Symphony's February concerts, Shostakovich and All That Jazz. Featuring music of Dmitri Shostakovich and George Gershwin, two 20th century contemporaries whose lives and music were greatly influenced by their vastly different environments, the concerts are Saturday, February 6 at 7:30pm, Sunday, February 7 at 3pm, and Tuesday, February 9 at 7:30pm. All concerts are at the Stevens Center of the UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA). Tickets are $15 - $55; student rush tickets at the door are $6. THE ART OF CHAD BEROTH: Opening Reception at Uptown Wine & Gallery on Friday, Feb. 5th, from 4:30 - 7pm. The exhibit runs through February 28 and features work in mixed media and acrylics on canvas. 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE: Twin City Stage. This spelling championship pits the quirkiest of heroes against one another in the unlikeliest of hit musicals. SOUP: Movement & Sound Improvisation at Greensboro Fringe Festival. February 5-February 6. The Greensboro Fringe Festival gets Dance! Dance styles include contact improvisation, modern, tap and hip hop. The common thread in both shows is that all performers will be improvising their roles in real time, so expect unique performances both nights. Both shows begin at 8 p.m. at Studio 323 in The Greensboro Cultural Arts Center, located at 200 N. Davie Street. Tickets are $5 at the door. For more information call 336-549-7431.
LEONARDO DREW: Artist Talk and Opening Reception at the Weatherspoon Art Museum. February 5, 6 pm Artist Talk (free, tickets required) 7 pm Exhibition Opening + Reception; 7:45 pm "Sociography", created and performed by UNCG Professor of Dance Larry Lavender and students in the UNCG Dance Department Due to limited seating, tickets will be issued for Leonardo Drew's talk. EMBODIMENT: Exhibtion Opening Reception Image gallery. Green Hill Center for NC Art, located in the Greensboro Cultural Center invites you to the opening reception of the Embodiment exhibition First Friday February 5 5:30-9:00. The featured North Carolina artists offer a wide range of approaches to the visual representation of the body. Through arresting multimedia installations, photographs, and sculptural works in clay, fiber and metal, visitors will be able to explore changing conceptions of the body, and how a sensorial experience informs a psychological state. AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS: Triad Stage at Pyrle Theater, February 7-February 28. It's not the destination, it's the journey. The Community Arts Cafe is now offering private instruction in piano at the Gallery of the Arts. Two teachers are available to instruct in classical, jazz, theory and songwriting.
